French couple forbidden from naming their child Nutella

Would have made a good match against Shirley Crabtree.

Itā€™s a good thing that Gale Gordon had a decidedly masculine voice to carry him through his career.

A friend of my father always used to call me Jake when I was little, which irritated me. Now after binge watching Adventure Time a ton I am quite fond of it.

I thought it was pronounced Throat Wobbler Mangrove.

Hell, I knew a Xanthe in high school. Nobody thought anything of it, much less made fun of her.

My guess of the cause-effect relationship would be that of a bogus superiority complex to compensate for their personal shortcomings.

The article for this one is interesting, in that the children were, again, allowed to be named thusly from the beginning, with people complaining only afterwards. And the pretext of state interference is parental negligence while the father claims that they operated with a lot of transparency. It wouldnā€™t surprise me either way if they were negligent or if the state intervened for political reasons. The UK had a lot of Nazi sympathizers before and during WWII and it would be naive to assume that all of the beliefs disappear because they are popularly unfashionable. Meanwhile, UK government over the years seems to have become increasingly authoritarian and xenophobic.

I guess one of the paradoxes of fascists (broadly speaking) is that they need to act it out for The Right Reasons ā„¢ or they fall on the wrong side of the PR fenceā€¦

White supremacism tends to attract the less-affluent, who may not feel they have much else to be proud about beyond their race. ā€œWe may be poor as dirt and addicted to crank, but at least we ainā€™t [non-hetero/white slur]!ā€ If youā€™re a successful sterling specimen, you have no need to fall back on such weak tea.

Come to think of it, chalking up oneā€™s good outcomes to being part of a Master Race would tend to undermine the popular ā€œself-made manā€ delusion.

Yeah, actually wealthy and powerful white people tend to do the opposite these days and deny that there is any difference at all between being of different races, and that they would have been just as successful if born a different race because of their hard work and smarts.

  1. Freakonomics say names donā€™t matter so from this, that ruling has no basis.

  2. Itā€™s not like the name is what triggers bullyingā€¦ Caring for being bullied is what does it.

  3. In fact, good parenting would be parents bullying the kid until he wonā€™t care anymore way before going to school. So when it gets there, it will be a breeze.

White supremacism isnā€™t so much about the superiority of whites as the inferiority of other races. It gives disenfranchised people a handy Other to blame for all their problemsā€“there are no jobs because They took them, jobs pay badly because They are willing to work for so little. Itā€™s a great trick for getting poor people to vote against their own best interests.

Considering yourself part of the Master Race means you deserve positive outcomes. If you donā€™t get them, itā€™s because They are evil, cheating, stealing scum.

I actually really love the name Xanthe. It made the short list but not the cut. So I used it as a character instead. Sapphire was one of the first I had to get out. And Kai. Great name, does not mesh my surname.

Sapphire is a lovely name.

We were once deciding on a name for a fuzzy member of the family and had the bright idea of putting all of the possible names in a hat. As a joke I also added ā€˜Anathemaā€™, as in Anathema Device from Good Omens.

Yeah, it got picked firstā€¦ and yeah we didnā€™t name her that.

If I was due in September I would have considered Sapphire for a middle name, but alas, husband does get veto rights as well. He also vetoed Immanuel, but weā€™re having a girl, so that doesnā€™t matter so much. As for Anathema Device and Good Omens, I have just started reading that book. I know Iā€™m slack that it took me this long, but it happens.

Immanuel is also lovely. I like your instinct in names

If only I didnā€™t have to get my husband to agree to the name as well.

Pre-nups are good, but you really should get a lawyer to look them over for standard things that are missing.

We husbands can be tricky. But I sincerely like your style. And I am sure you both picked a wonderful name.

(Immanuel for a girls middle name would be epic)

Guaranteed people would confuse it with Emmanuelle.

Daneel Jr came within a whisker of being called Nixon.

Why is it that people who like awesome names are always limited by their spouses? Maybe we intuitively seek people out who will hold us back from making terrible mistakes?

As an adult, I wish my mother hadnā€™t stopped my father from giving me the awesome name that he wanted to. On the other hand, itā€™s probably for the best that we collectively nixed his eight-syllable proposal for my sister.
