Millions of Texans without power, including us from 2am Sunday to 15 min ago. rolling blackouts for everyone else. Temps around 9 degrees last night. No water in the whole city. public utility commission just gave order for price hike in electricity because of fucking scarcity.
Fuck today. Fuck ERCOT and fuck all the people who decided it was too expensive to harden Texas infrastructure.
ETA: i also got called a karen for asking someone to move their car from the pump. They’d been there 10 min. I was very polite. I kept my temper but fuck that stupid white kid.
And even that’s not an end of attacks on woman’s rights here. Leading anti-abortion activists want to ban abortions even in the cases where mother’s life is in danger.
while the last three weeks were better than the months before, today seems like the despair is coming back.
Only so slightly sleep-deprived that I could constantly distracted myself from WFH today (including BB BBS) ADHD-style, and hated meself for it. I was close to despair, made a break, I fulfilled my family duty (aka: best time of the day), decided I was to tired and demotivated to work at night, opened a bottle of Kölsch to share with some friends (virtually, of course) on the last day of carnival and got a response.
Close friend sent back a pic clearly from his parents living room. Which is not good, in most cases. This time, it really sounds awful. Father diagnosed with NHL, got heart problems during chemo, got defibrillated and is now in hypothermia to “recover”, all within a week. I can’t do anything, can’t even click me a rental and go there, just for a talk, a beer or a scotch. Fuck this day, and the necessary pandemic restrictions in particular.
Fucking fuck of a fuck today. I regret the beer already. And it’s not my day which is shit, really. That family is going through several hells now.
At least 15 dead in California crash: Hospital officials - ABC News (go.com)
“Hospital officials said they believe there were 27 passengers in the SUV that struck a semi-truck full of gravel.”
Holy shit… I expected it to be some sort of chain reaction thing. Wow.
How big of an SUV was it?
the article says they’re investigating it as human trafficking. it was a ford explorer with the backseats taken out. crammed full of people and no seat beats.
Victims of America’s ongoing desire for fresh produce while suppressing wages and exploiting minorities.
don’t forget slaughterhouse work.
speaking of farming, i just learned today that dairy farmers in the us and canada feed palm protein to cows to increase fat content of the milk. sigh sorry orangutans. it was nice to share a planet with you for a while.
Horrible.

Don’t worry, if global heating continues we’ll have a new habitat ready for them in Newfoundland in no time…
There has been a bit of backlash here in … “buttergate” is attracting political attention.
For all our faults, we don’t always legislate the hell out of everything here, I really do expect that a hard stare from politicians will largely solve this. Dairy farmers enjoy generous protections for their businesses here, a system with broad public support. At worst, they won’t risk losing that support. The alternative is the system of hormone-infused, low profit margin dairy farming with a high bankruptcy rate which is… an uninspiring option.
No. That’s awful.
thanks for sharing that around.
that’s very sad news.
I hate to ask but what happened to the dedicated thread about this?
Yeah, @ficuswhisperer made a dedicated thread about it because i remember leaving my own comment so maybe they deleted it themselves? I am reluctant bringing this up in case it was deleted for good reason.
The family asked that this not be made too public. There is a very large readership here, not all of whom are here in good faith.
Sorry, I didn’t know. Deleting…
