I’m not so concerned with what one’s parents chose in the past, so much as a willingness to use ones own real name right now if one is going to be tossing out other peoples real names out there, and then running them down. It’s one thing if it’s a citizen and the president. But sniping at designers and just everyday people because one is upset is… well, sorry if it’s ad hominem… it’s childish and antisocial.
Most gamers ought to be able to quickly distance themselves from that behavior by example. Most do.
I suppose the gaters perceive a power imbalance between the games journalists and themselves? I openly wonder if they know that power imbalance is small and it is in their own imagination, a result of the limited amount of the world they have yet seen.
And I wonder if this isn’t just a bunch of powerless selfish 13 year olds acting exactly their age? Would be nice to know for sure, but I don’t see some wave of courage washing over the gaters leading them deal openly and fairly with other people. Do you?

I see not narcissistic children but grown men and women. There is no evidence that gg supports are teenagers. None. I’d prefer of we stopped assuming that. It dismisses the seriousness of the harassment.
You’re not wrong. Though Occam’s Razor says some to many gaters are teenagers. They’re not all adults. Agreed? To at least some degree, teenagers, and by extension their parents, are liable for the harassment. ALSO fully involved are adults with the emotional reasoning skills of teenagers, and the humility of toddlers.
If you stop assuming I mean they’re -actually- teenagers, then ‘we’ will have stopped assuming it.

(CoD games are usually the top 3 sellers in any given year for console games, so I picked it as a sample. But in 2012 for example the other top 4 were Halo 4, Assassin’s Creed, Madden, etc, other heavily male and “hardcore” games.)
the biggest swath of hard-core gamers are 18-24. I’d call that young (and mostly stupid) adults. There’s a nearly equal number at 13-17, clearly teenagers, as 25-34. I agree that once you get to 25-34 and beyond people should be grown ups that know better, but… there’s quite a bit of evidence that in the GG hardcore gaming demographic you’re dealing with, at best, young adults here. And of course overwhelmingly male.
Maybe if you could show that gaters are disproportionately CoD players, you’d have something. Even then though about 30% of CoD players are not “young adults.”
