User Ludd given a timeout for trying to police who should be “allowed” to use the term “Black”. If it isn’t obvious to everyone here by now that racism is a thing and allowing those who have been affected choose how to be addressed is quite possibly the bare minimum of respect one can give at this time, well, I don’t know what to say.

User oktroj has been asked not to return after, as far as I can tell, declaring war on the entire community then lobbing b-class insults and “I know you are, what am I”-style insults while being shocked - shocked - that racism would be flagged by the community here as, I don’t know - racism.

Masks, and specifically the lack thereof as a metaphor for respect, are really becoming harbingers of assholery in ways I had not anticipated.

I put this into google translate…

“asked not to return for being an utter dick”.

“Florida Man” Alex_Miami has been sent on permanent vacation for equating discussions on how to protect oneself from police brutality and excessive force as literal treason and giving comfort to the enemy.

When your political opponents become enemy combatants to you, you’ve lost the plot - something everyone should consider during this political climate, IMHO.

Thanks for this. We spoke about this privately

Part of why I asked to be anonymized and why I severely cut back on posting was someone posting revenge porn of a friend + some scary harassment I endured.

I appreciate how hard you work to make this a safe space, and understand you can’t control things off-site.

We appreciate your work.

User don_simpson1 has been asked not to return for first suggesting that the murder of George Floyd was justified because he had a criminal record, with a sprinkle of flipping out at the mod team when - predictably - the userbase flagged his post immediately.

User comedian has been given a timeout for, again, focusing on meta minutae on the periphery of an issue, rather than the issue itself.

A lot of us are, I think, the types to end up in wild digressions about red vs blue, mac vs windows, star trek vs star wars, redhat vs suse - but when you consistently post in topics of import, ignoring the topic entirely and instead focusing on that minutae, it becomes a source of derailment every time one posts, and in many ways is worse than being contrarian, because the position one is arguing really has nothing to do with the original post at all.

As I said, this often happens in good faith and in no way do I want to discourage mutants being mutants, but when the majority of your posts are this way, it begins to become apparent that disruption is the point, and that’s not constructive.

user ilris_ota given a brief timeout for reposting moderated comments trying to gatekeep the type of replies they receive.

I’ve said this before, but posting a text comment on a public forum will, sooner or later due to the nature of the medium result in people misinterpreting or misunderstanding your intent or position. This is the nature of forums. Your remedy is to clarify your position, or ignore the response. One of the options is not to tell others what they are allowed to respond to, or how.

The only exception to this is if the response goes against our community guidelines, at which point, flag the response and we’ll investigate, don’t respond to it.

Thanks.

user Declan_Mcmanus has been given a timeout for - repeatedly - insulting other users, posting one-line, canned responses, and, most importantly, ignoring repeated moderation of their messages, and the explanations for them.

If you want to defend your position, please, go ahead - the moderators will ensure you can do so. But if you can’t make your point without insulting others, or resorting to boilerplate responses, one-line replies that don’t add to the conversation, vague and general insults to entire populations, or otherwise be respectful of your fellow bbs-ers, then you are not adding to the conversation here.

User SamWinston has been given a timeout for suggesting fervour over mask-wearing is “ideological demagoguery”, even after being asked not to, rather than as a sound way to protect others in the event you are exposed to COVID-19 and don’t yet show symptoms.

Incredibly, there is in fact a great deal of ideology involved in mask wearing, but it’s not from the evidence-based experts. Posts that muddy the waters surrounding COVID-19 are not welcome here. People are dying and if some people end up wearing masks when they didn’t have to in order to help convice the majority to do the right thing and help stop the spread of this virus, then that is a small price to pay. Boing Boing has zero interest in keeping posts that confuse this issue on the site.

Thank you for your work on that.
I keep repeating that WDKS about SARS-CoV-2 and Covid-19, but we also DO know a lot of shit already. Even if sometimes details are a bit confusing, we have evidence. We also have common sense.

Blurring the lines, muddying the water and confusing opinion with evidence-based recommendations is dangerous.

Your service to defuse this time bomb is not only duly noted, but I thank you from the bottom of my heart for it.

I often do understand where people might be coming from. What motivates them. What makes them question authorities and policies. I understand human fear, I understand anger and helplessness. I understand the pressure, economic and social. We are in this together. We need to help each other, not fight each other. Part of that helping is identifying what is not helping, or even making things worse.

User Keith_McClary has been asked not to return after repeatedly derailing topics with offtopic (or topic-adjacent) replies. This is another user who worked diligently to “softly derail” posts with increasing frequency, and now finds themselves in fine company with others who have attempted the same bad-faith actions over time.

It’s one thing to take issue with a post, or an opinion. But when the vast majority of your posts are to play “devil’s advocate”, it becomes pretty clear that being contrarian is the point, and no one has any time for that crap.

User NoThisIsPatrick has been asked not to return.

This user hs been consistently engaging in disruptive and trollish behaviour for some time, but repeated moderation seems to have had no effect.

Their recent decisions to post about:

  • Defending slavery as a net-positive because of the value returned to African shipbuilders
  • Denouncing the political postings of others by indicating that they have no intention of voting (thereby adding no content of value), and
  • Attempting to use his genitalia as an analogy for choking out protestors

… while lamenting the BBS as a “slap fight” in his profile are just the latest in a long line of clearly not caring about the other posters here on the BBS.
