User Dabidoh has been given a timeout for engaging in some classic Sealioning - first creating a false equivalence, then demanding, even post-flagging, that the conversation continue on their chosen topic.
If the community has flagged your post because they feel it doesn’t add to the conversation and derails the topic at hand, and the moderators have agreed with that assessment, I recommend taking a step back and trying to understand things from the perspective of others - not barreling forward and making the topic about yourself and your pet position instead. That’s not engaging with our community, that’s ignoring it.
Or trying to commandeer it, which is also not cool.
Anyone can start their own topic on pretty much anything… but such folks seem like they’d rather take over an already existing conversation and tailor it to suit their personal preferences.
Initially, I would have given them a timeout for both sealioning and trying, repeatedly, to push the idea that “Karen” is more about race than behaviour. IMHO any pejorative term tends to be problematic, and there’s a lively discussion on that very topic on the BBS. Still, I draw the line at repeatedly, consistently - and despite being moderated for it and explicitly warned about it - trying to equate the treatment of “Karens” to the sort of racism. People of Colour have to face every day as equivalent. That is perilously close to “all lives matter” in response.
However, upon reviewing their deleted and moderated posts, I realized this user has been consistently attempting to derail multiple topics on the BBS with the imposition of their worldview (for example, repeated off-topic remarks about what Boing Boing should or should not cover.)
This seems to be a case of one user consistently causing posts to go “off the rails,”; trying to have the discussion focus on their replies instead. This happens naturally in conversations. Brief derails are expected, and extended ones lately have been moved by our fantastic group of Leaders. But when the vast majority of your posts lead to derails, it becomes apparent that you are not here to talk to the community but to talk at them and try and drive your own narrative rather than contribute to the discussions already taking place.
I’m not sure why today is “derailing sealion recognition day,” but it seems to have become that.
I think this is old news by now, but I just got my first notification of this sort: I want to thank the mods and devs both for turning on admin notifications for replies removed due to parent post being flagged, and for including the text of the original and the reply in the notification. (@orenwolf, @codinghorror, and whoever else deserves credit!)
3Salkow has been banned for - again - complaining about the level of discourse from fellow mutants, in another example of those “wait, why are you spending time here then?” head scratchers. Doubly so after having been previously flagged for the same off-topic and derailing behaviour.
This is apparently the kind of day it is today. Poppagander has earned a double-length timeout for doing exactly the same thing as MotoGuzzi, more than once this time.
Protip: If you have to keep saying a joke over and over again because it keeps getting ignored and even moderated, then the joke probably isn’t as funny as you think it is.
Dogged curiosity has often been my bane… but here goes. Question: Does your ‘system’ automatically identify/“score”/notify/alert you regarding miscreants and recidivists?
