But note that that is only emergency care. My understanding is that many hospital’s get away with interpreting that as “get them stabilized then shove them out the door”.

And that itself apparently has its limits and loopholes of what must and what isn’t covered.
My unprofessional guess is that they provide a “screening” and discharge the patient without providing for their needs.

Some people need to just take a deep breath and pull themselves up by their below-the-knee prosthetic legs-straps.

As well as being massively archaic and highly problematic to begin with.
Amongst other things, it forbids abortion and the surgical treatment of kidney stones. And has much to say about the duty younger doctors have to financially support their medical elders.

Ohhh, so THAT’S why a stonemason came in when I had kidney stones. Well, he did a good job, and now I have a tiny sculpture of a snowman.
