Sooo… it’s the allegations he figures tarnished his reputation and embarrassed his family, not the fact he actually violated ethics rules??

That sounds suspiciously like the “And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn’t for you nosy kids!” line you’d get from every unrepentant Scooby-Doo villain.

There’s a lot of people who seem to think being called things is worse than being the thing. Being called racist is the bad thing, not being racist. Being called a thief is the bad thing, not actually stealing. etc. No idea where this attitude comes from.
