Perhaps even darker than intended? Given the history that was an obvious inspiration for the Empire in the Star Wars universe, it’s really odd to see any part of the German government actually inviting such comparisons.
While I doubt this was a deliberate statement being made by an AfD type on board, I would not be surprised to see a bunch of crew members on this ship disciplined to various degrees for this prank.
Diplomats slippery as an eel
A spokesman for the German Embassy in London said: “The commander of the corvette FGS Braunschweig is a big Star Wars fan and an admirer of the legendary musical scores of John Williams.
“He chooses a different Williams tune whenever his ship is visiting a foreign harbour.”
Are we meant to be intimidated by a ship being towed backwards?
Strange choice to make, it’s not like there’s not plenty of copyright free intimidating German music.
That is a big corvette, isn’t it? And isn’t it odd how some of their frigates are larger than British destroyers.
Please don’t encourage us to get in another Battleship Race with Germany. Whilst we totally won the last one, it helped bankrupt the country and didn’t even have any effect on the outcome of World War 1.
I believe you have naught to dread on that count.
Once, all the Germans were warlike and mean, but that couldn’t happen again.
We taught them a lesson in 1918 and they’ve hardly bothered us since then.
Who names a ship after a sausage?
Yeah, somehow a ship being towed backwards by a tug doesn’t seem quite as fearsome as under its own power.
They parked it next to HMS Belfast just to calm things down.
Only if you ignore that the British had their own empire. Even if it did not last for 1000 years like the last German one
Where has he played the Gilligan’s Island theme?
Very true. (Although it’s also well documented where George Lucas found much of his inspiration for the Galactic Empire. It’s no coincidence that the bad guys are called “stormtroopers” and that Vader’s helmet is shaped the way that it is.)
No question the Imperial legions were inspired by Nazi Germany but I think Vader’s look was mostly based on Samurai armor:
Though Vader did lose the mustache on his mask…
Hmm. Did he, though? That triangular vent under his button of a nose actually does look pretty moustache-like, now that I’m thinking about it.
Eh, that’s what they said about Torpedoboote and destroyers…
Or an incredible self own, considering the democratic leaning, omnishamble rebel alliance defeated the Empire resoundingly…
???
Braunschweig is the name of a german city, its english name is Brunswick.
… well, Vader and the Emperor killed each other and then everything was magically fixed
It may not make sense if we look too closely
