In the days of Dobie, kids or teenagers made up their own slang, which was different literally from school to school. This made it difficult for those not in the know to follow. This was a common trope in popular culture, and it can be seen, for instance, in the Cary Grant movie The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer. Magazines would occasionally print guides to teen-age slang, which were hopeless, because they would be based on other media, or one particular school. Now, it comes delivered nationwide by TV and the internet, and it’s not difficult for anyone interested to keep up with.
Why dismayed? I love Walter Denton. He can turn a phrase like none other
just because I love Maynard and without access to input from the writers and illustrators, it seemed like Shaggy was not a Krebs analogue according to Kasem.
Denton was a good character, too, but I’m personally a fan of Krebs.
