“It’s long been an open secret among fans and “Scooby-Doo” creatives that Velma is gay”

Daphne too, if you believe what a quick search at Pornhub tells you

Sexualising a kids cartoon character?

Now that I think about it I don’t think Scoob’s bestie ever DID shag anybody on screen in the original cartoon.

I was just thinking about this. I only know the cartoons up to the mid-eighties, but in those I don’t recall any of the (human) gang showing any kind of sexual interest in anyone (I’m sure there must be an exception somewhere). But for a while, they did without Fred and Velma and I recall simply assuming that Daphne and Shaggy had become a couple.

Time to dust off my old Velma costume again!

Am I the only one? “Confirmed”?

Really, I thought everyone knew.

right?! just like we all knew that Shaggy was a penultimate stoner and “Scooby snacks” was code for cannabis! i mean, the show was not subtle.

There are subreddits dedicated to semi-nude Velma cosplayers who haven’t made this assumption.

Though maybe the target audience is not what I assumed?

“No!! Not Velma, she’s the one I was attracted to!”

“Dude, she’s not real, you know that, right? If you’re hot for imaginary women then you’re not involuntarily celibate, you’re clueless.”

Also, and I don’t know if anyone else caught onto this, but apparently they loosely implied that Shaggy might have used drugs.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with getting hot for an imaginary character, but it takes a mind-boggling amount of entitlement to get angry just because the character doesn’t reciprocate.

I’m just saying she could have at least responded to my letters!

She ghosted you? How ironic.

Meddling kids!

And she’d have gotten away with it too, if it hadn’t been for these meddling rebooters!

Random Scooby-Doo origin (1969) notes: Shaggy is loosely based on Maynard G. Krebs (Bob Denver)(note the same beard) from The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. This kinda makes Shaggy a Beatnik (not a hippy?).
There are Dobie Gillis cast members who one could guess were models for Daphne Blake and Velma Dinkley; not quite so much Fred Jones. Supposedly there are also elements from The Archie Show as your generic white teenage troupe at the time.
