So how do you interpret that 1993 quote by Jesse Jackson? In particular, why do you find it relevant to this thread?
Glenn Reynolds apologizes for saying drivers surrounded during street protest should "Run Them Down"
The critic Laurie Stone said Hicks wanted to be told if he was being sexist, racist, or prejudiced in any way. He opened himself up to direct criticism of how privilege shaped his perception.
If I learned nothing else from him I take that as a lesson.
Mod note: stay on topic.
The fear of encountering a group of young black males on the street at night is not unique to white right wingers.
I’ll be in Chicago in March. Any white BB’ers care to join me on an evening stroll along South Halstead? Say, between 63rd and 71st?
You’re coming to visit me on the south side of Chicago? How nice.
P.S. People generally don’t walk very far anywhere in March. It’s still rather cold then.
So you reached all the way back to 1993 for a quotation from a black person to support your preconceived point. Oops, I mean, bias. Yay for you.
Meanwhile, I don’t think that’s the only legitimate way to interpret Jackson’s 23-year-old comment. How can you be sure that what he was lamenting was the supposed reality of that fear, and not instead the fact that even black people (such as Jackson himself) are susceptible to such fearful, unfair, white stereotypes about black men?
You might try Famous Liberal Michael Moore. And as you’re walking together, he’d probably be glad to chat with you about the insidious common white fear of black men.
“Kinder, gentler European bees”…SMH.
What does race have to do with it? I’d be pretty nervous if I were driving past a bird sanctuary and a bunch of white people surrounded my car, too.
Yeah, I’m sure you’d be just as nervous as if you were surrounded by black people during a BLM protest. It’s all the same to colorblind people like you, amirite?
You might want to have that chip on your shoulder looked at.
Nice as hominem. You might want to address what I said, instead of stating assumptions about what I’m like.
You might want to reflect on that yourself.
