To be fair, āLord of the Fliesā was an allegory of the elite British boarding school system specifically, and it was a pretty darned accurate portrayal.
ETA: also WWII, but Golding was a school teacher and clearly drew from that experience.
True enough, but those facts have little to do with its enormous popularity. Whatās more significant, what a bookās author may have meant, or how most interpret it? (I do agree that it may not be fair to blame Golding himself for the latter.)
