I love all the wood in the house, though Iā€™m not a fan of film finishes like poly on wood floors.

To be fair, ā€œLord of the Fliesā€ was an allegory of the elite British boarding school system specifically, and it was a pretty darned accurate portrayal.

ETA: also WWII, but Golding was a school teacher and clearly drew from that experience.

True enough, but those facts have little to do with its enormous popularity. Whatā€™s more significant, what a bookā€™s author may have meant, or how most interpret it? (I do agree that it may not be fair to blame Golding himself for the latter.)
