That makes me wonder how it might help with pancreatic cancer, which is one of the most lethal.

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional.

My mother died of pancreatic cancer in 2017. Her insulin production was never impacted. The oncologist explained that the pancreas is essentially 2 organs in 1 package: the endocrine part which produces insulin (islets of Langerhans) and the exocrine part which produces digestive enzymes . The most common type of pancreatic cancer is adenocarcinoma which affects the larger digestive enzyme producing tissues. Cancers involving the islets of Langerhans are much rarer. As I understand it, this device wouldn’t help in most pancreatic cancer cases.

The major problem with pancreatic cancer is that it’s so aggressive and it isn’t detectable usually until it’s already at a late stage. So it wouldn’t help the cancer directly, but like insulin injections; it would treat the diabetes that comes from having one’s pancreas removed.

Unfortunately, by that stage it’s metastasized and the surgery usually won’t cure. But may slightly increase survival time. I had two first degree relatives who passed away from this. And am currently in a special program and study as I’m considered at very high risk for this. I just got 8 vials of blood sucked out by the vampires today for additional tests. Including medical genetic testing.

Great news for social work therapists and their patients.

The Alabama Senate State Government Affairs Committee voted to advance legislation allowing certain highly trained social workers to diagnose mental illnesses.

House Bill 56 (HB56) is sponsored by State Representative Frances Holk-Jones. HB56 passed in the House 104 to 1.

Holk-Jones explained that “Alabama is currently the only state that does not allow” these highly trained social workers to diagnose mental illness.

and

The legislation expands the scope of practice of a licensed independent clinical social worker, including the authority to diagnose and develop treatment plans. “The scope of practice does not include the diagnosis, treatment, or provision of advice to a client for problems or complaints relating to conditions outside the boundaries of the practice of social work.”

Previously, licensed clinical social workers could not diagnose. They could only give a “diagnostic impression” and from there it would go to a psychiatrist for an official diagnosis. So at one practice here in Alabama they employed a bunch of social workers, and also a highly-paid psychiatrist. The social work therapists made a “diagnostic impression” which was handed to the Psychiatrist, who would sign off in it. It was silly, and neither cost-effective nor good for patient care. this is a huge improvement.

I’m not shocked. Those “make a sale” subroutines are probably a huge part of anything analyzing human speech. Would Paramount sue me if I started referring to my new anti-marketing dialect as Darmok? :vulcan_salute:t4:

Is this the right place for this?

My partner & I are going to see the Psychedelic Furs next Friday, May 5. That’s good news as far as I am concerned.

Wish I could have managed to score tickets to see Ministry…
