Caltrain doesn’t go where you would want. The Googleplex is off near the waterfront and the Caltrain goes so slowly and has such a deranged schedule that it takes 2hr 19 mins versus 39 mins for a car.
it isn’t simply people making bad decisions. There is also lack of empowerment as well as starting out from a disadvantaged position.
You started out by characterizing me as trolling. Now your argument against the evidence of a stratified, two-tier system at Google is that you “don’t believe it.” Given those two data points, I’m not particularly interested in engaging with you.
I have no contempt for what Google and other “big tech” employees do - I have friends and clients at several of the largest Silicon Valley employers. I have serious concerns about corporate and public policies that are impacting the region where I live, and frustration over the short-sightedness and techno-libertarian policies driving many of the problems.
Cool story, bro.
Where are the people staffing all the restaurants, drugstores, grocery stores, gyms, parking garages, etc. etc. in SF supposed to live, in your estimation?
Typically with someone earning enough to actually able to pay the rent… Or you know… in a place that’s actually affordable. Quality staff at a restaurant can rake in close to 6 figures a year in places a half step nicer than an Olive Garden… in towns that don’t cost an arm and a leg to live in. Actually many of the positions you mention can make plenty of money. It’s going to suck to inflate all those prices, but if the commercial property value goes up - the business needs to be making more and paying their employees proportionally more. Inflation isn’t magic… nor is building more housing. I mean, I suppose they haven’t quite made SF a gated community, but generally the answer is - wherever it’s affordable. I’m not even sure SF prices are affordable to most normal Google engineers who don’t have stock options. My guess is most Googlers don’t care to spend over 2/3rds of their take home pay on rent alone.
Why are people protesting Google specifically? I guess Google employees by definition are the ‘new rich’ because the tech company only came into existence in the last decade or so. but isn’t making it at a place like Google what the ‘American dream’ is all about?
Google should run a discounted deportation service - either out of state or abroad - for anyone affronted by the presence of Google engineers
