That’s almost certainly not the answer. I am certain I am not the only person to find multiple races attractive or otherwise valid romantic interests. The problem from my perspective is the decision to implement step 1 above and basically say “We don’t know what to do about step 2 so we’re going to punt on the issue”.
I think one thing that certainly needs to happen to make sure that computer code that is more and more a part of the systems that serve us need to be written by a more diverse group of people. Part of the problem is how pale and male the profession tends to be. Having more women and more people of color of whatever gender will certainly help in thinking through these social questions. they will bring a different set of perspectives to writing code and how people interact with it.
Agreed. And to reiterate a message Cory has amplified in the past, the whole world would benefit from technologists both serving in and being supported in a public service role.
It’s not even a sunk cost. Just as investment in education is investment in any society’s future, investment in public service is investment in the well-being of the entire society, and frankly that needs to expand to all knowledge work, history included.
I dearly hope we as a society learn the value of education and service before it’s too late.
Agreed. We have to get out of this neo-liberal mindset that makes everything about the bottom line.
