Happy Mutants food and drink topic (Part 1)

mmmmm, marzipan. Great suggestions! I also have a tart pan that I use less often than I’d like - you’re giving me inspiration for that (pear frangipane, anyone?)

Oden. The fishcakes are prepackaged but we added chicken thighs, daikon, boiled eggs, konyaku yam (the dark wedges).

Yum. So looking forward to this at New Year’s Day.

I’m not even a huge fan of Oden, but damn that looks good.

There is about 2 pounds of daikon, cut small, just under that surface. Peak translucent/absorbed with dashi. Its going to be our lunch/too tired to cook meals going to New Years.

I just had the most amazing meal in first class* on a Japan Airlines flight from Osaka to Tokyo (this was served on a 50-minute flight!).

*No, I am not some kind of fatcat. As long as there are open seats when you arrive at the airport (first come, first served), you can upgrade to first class for 7-8,000 Yen (about 65-75 USD) and, as you can see, it’s worth it.

We made a big Indian meal last week and I had some of the samosa filling left over, and some of the tamarind/mint chutney.
Today I grated a carrot into the filling (basically mashed potatoes with onion, garlic, ginger and herbs/spices) to stretch it out a bit, added an egg, and cooked it like latkes or potato pancakes.
To go with the theme, I mixed some of the chutney with Greek yogurt for a creamy topping.
Served with some fresh cucumbers and tomatoes on the side, drizzled with more chutney. A very delicious use of leftovers! I will never again stress about having too much wonderful samosa filling.

That could have been a serious issue! I’m glad you were able to solve the problem.

:joy: yes, thank you. We all made it through okay, and we’re just “grate”-ful to be here.

Turin, home of nougat

The creamy confection made of chocolate and nuts was invented in the capital of the Italian Piedmont region. To this day, Turin is known as the capital of nougat.

It’s weird: I love chocolate, I love nuts, I love chocolate with nuts, I love chocolate with marzipan…but I hate nougat.

No explanation for that!

Beer?

ETA: now that the image is loaded, yes that’s actually a decent one. I ordered it by accident and didn’t notice a difference.

Can’t go wrong with Lagunitas.

I tried this one this summer at the brewery, and it was frankly better than the regular IPA.
