Having pets instead of kids "takes away our humanity," says Pope Francis

I prefer this Francis…

Always thought it was strange how Catholic clergy doles out advice on marriage and children.

No worries, I don’t think a lot of people are aware of the malthusian arguments about reproduction… it’s been a right wing anti-class and racist drum beat since at least the 18th century.

He named himself after him, of course.

Well…

I was raised Catholic. The purpose of marriage, I was taught, is to have children. Period. So, there is that.

On the other end, the Catholic church still counts ex-Catholics as Catholics until and unless they renounce their baptism. And maybe even afterwards. I renounced my baptism in 2010 and never heard anything official back from the diocese.

No tin foil hats required.

We could make comments about how the production of more Catholic children means there are more children available for the clergy to diddle, but that would be wrong to make note of, especially after they have tried SO hard to turn the hundreds of pedophile priests in to the authorities and drive them from the RCC.

I feel 100% certain that I would not have been a good parent. I would have been a bad parent, in fact. I know because I am so similar to my father, and I was the parentified oldest child. I am familiar with what it takes to raise kids, because I saw my mother do a good job. It’s just a job I never wanted.

Breaking the cycle and all that, is the reason I did NOT have kids. It would have been more selfish to bring a child into the life of a person (me) who is unable to do everything necessary to do right by a child.

If that means the pope doubts my humanity, then I don’t know what to say, I’ve never been a follower.

DH and I decided, after having several pets, that if small furry not particularly sentient critters are so much trouble, neither of us wanted to be responsible for raising another human being. That, and the Mom Curse.

Yeah, there’s definitely that. It’s a big reason I liked this new flick. It does a great job with the nasty idea that a woman who doesn’t feel like a “natural mother” must be a bad woman.

Not sure if I want to take life experience from an organization that is still working it way though apologies and is a few hundred years behind on them. Have they made it up to apologizing for the inquisition yet? I’ve kinda lost track of where they are on their list of shit they need to own up to.

I get the feeling that is a dig at his still living predecessor, who is an unabashed cat person.

The Catholics are leaders in trying to force their flock to reproduce to make more Catholics, so this is no real surprise other than he’s been remarkably progressive on other topics. Ah, well, po one is nerfect.
