Officials in Alabama have shut down an elementary school for the rest of the week and are conducting a deep clean after 773 of the school’s 974 students were absent Wednesday amid an explosive outbreak of gastrointestinal illness.
But local outlet WKRG reported Thursday that the outbreak has already spread beyond Fairhope West. On Thursday, 1,231 students from four other area schools were also absent, including 721 students at Fairhope East Elementary School, 136 at a third elementary school, 170 at a middle school, and 204 at a high school. These are in addition to the 974 students at Fairhope West who are out of school while it is shut down.
Well, at least they are not following the FL model…
But, the study has limitations that preclude a firm conclusion that cannabis is causing cardiovascular disease. The study relies on self-reported data on both cardiovascular health and cannabis use—both of which can be unreliable. It also relied on data collected at a specific point in time. It’s possible that some people turned to cannabis use after developing cardiovascular disease rather than before, for instance. The survey data can’t make that distinction; it’s only making an association.
On the other,
But, the national survey data—collected between 2016 and 2020—also contained data on people who used cannabis less frequently than daily. Survey respondents were asked how many days in the past 30 days they used cannabis, which allowed researchers to estimate the odds of cardiovascular disease along the whole spectrum of cannabis use. And they found near-linear dose-responses, with more days of use per month associated with higher risk.
Take home? Of course, more study needed. And, moderation in all things is a good idea. But probably too early to draw solid conclusions, as correlation does not equal causation. Some thing to watch, I guess.
Scoring political points to the detriment and peril of the people that the state’s surgeon general is officially charged with protecting? Check.
Setting up a next-wave reservoir of infectious diseases in a climate breakdown tropical (or sub-tropical) environment in a state with one of the highest poverty levels in the U.S.? Check.
Yup, exactly. And, before anybody crows about “sawing FL loose,” diseases do not respect state lines at all. The insanity going on there endangers us all.
Yeah, microbes don’t respect national borders, state lines, any of those human-invented conventions that allow people to do political business.
There are brave, committed people–young people!–doing needful and difficult work in Florida.
I sure want people like Zander Moricz, and all kids [everywhere] to have positive futures.
Florida is not merely some jokey “God’s Waiting Room” scene chockablock with MAGAs, gators, oranges, Disney, incredible beaches, amazing food, and Florida Man memes.
So’s arsenic. 100% natural. Yeah, yellow oleander is seriously bad juju. My problem with “natural” or “herbal” meds is the utter lack of regulation or control. There is literally no requirement that the contents in any way reflect the label. caveat emptor in spades, man.
Yeah, not at clear as I should be! That’s a list of things yellow oleander causes. So far as I know, there is no use for the stuff. Not even small quantities will help with any kind of health issue
Which brings up, how the hell did it get in there? I can speculate that it grew as a weed in their crop, and they couldn’t be bothered to get it out. See above. No requirement until it causes harm. The FDA is not allowed to act until there is harm.
Health officials said people may have been exposed to the first patient on Feb. 27 either at Galter Medical Pavilion at Swedish Hospital between 8:30 a.m. CT and 12 p.m. CT, or on Chicago Transit Authority Bus 92 (Foster) between 9:15 a.m. CT and 11:30 a.m. CT, ABC 7 Chicago reported.
On Friday, a second case was confirmed in a young child staying at a new arrivals shelter in the Pilsen neighborhood, in the city’s Lower West Side, health officials said in a release provided to ABC News. Similar to the first patient, the child has since recovered and is no longer infectious, according to officials.
Hospital, transit center and shelter for new arrivals. That’s about the worst possible areas for high risk exposure. Holy shit, can we not get our shit together???
The contrasting responses in Chicago and Florida could be critical this year as the country faces a continued threat of measles resurgence. Already this year, the US has tallied at least 45 measles cases in 17 states. In all of 2023, the US saw 58 cases. In January, the CDC urged health care providers to “be on alert” for measles. The relatively high tally so far is linked to two significant factors: a rise in measles globally as routine vaccination stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic and slipping rates of childhood vaccination coverage in the US amid the spread of anti-vaccine rhetoric.
I have no words…
45 cases in less than 3 months, vs 58 all of last year. This could get uglier by far.
