I dislike the idea of heating my mug. If I liked drinking slowly I think I’d rather use one of those sketchy immersion heaters?

I think I’m the exception that proves the rule.
I’d be shocked if this thing had a single transistor in it much less a microcontroller for anything approaching smart. My guess is the heater is a PTC element since they naturally self regulate and a spring loaded mechanism to turn it on when enough weight is put on the plate.
