How 1988's Akira predicted the chaos of 2020

Heh, warbly anime sound tracks on an ELP VHS

I read that the book which spawned these movies is very popular in Japan.

There is even a parody:

Another cyberpunk obscure anime:

Maybe Matrix one year before Matrix.

I didn’t take to Akira the first time I watched it. I can’t remember why, exactly. Possibly it was just too much information, too fast. I like it now, and although I got rid of the first DVD I had of it, I have another now. I don’t see a lot of anime (not having a TV or an online streaming subscription) but I did make an effort to watch Ghost in the Shell. I still have that DVD. De gustibus non disputandum. I found it just so Clichéd it made my skin crawl. In comparison with anime like “Millenium Actress”, it doesn’t stand up, for me. Perfect Blue was another that I watch again from time to time, but I still don’t exactly like it, for reasons I can’t explain.
The cop firing a tear-gas canister straight into a protester’s chest? That sort of thing has been happening since there were protests - it’s just that now with so many smartphones, officialdom can’t deny it’s happening.
