I’m not sure it is true he did more immediate damage to the country, but the normalization of certain modes of politics made it possible for subsequent administrations (on both sides of the aisle) to behave badly with impunity. Fiscal irresponsibility, capricious invasions of small countries, casual disregard for the truth (“bullshit” as defined by Harry Frankfurt), casual disrespect of political opponents and journalists, appointment of obviously-unqualified people to important posts: Reagan made all this acceptable. Even Nixon, who was a hate-filled pathological liar, at least in public didn’t shrug off bad presidential behavior as a joke.
