How to fail at marketing to Gen X

Indeed it has

FWIW “Harsh Realm” was, IIRC, a thrash metal show in Dallas on KNON back in the mid- to late-80s. Maybe the verbiage had made the rounds…

This works for me.

Also: fuck mainstream or not, Heathers ruled my world. And my kids love it now.

Only 44% of Boomers (then 18-29 year olds) who voted that year voted for Reagan. Moreover, in 1984 61% of 18-21 year olds (people born 1963-1966) voted for him, the strongest support of any age group until you hit 65+, while the age 25-29 cohort was at 57%, the lowest of any age group. (Data from the Roper center.) I’m afraid people born after 1962 don’t get a pass on Reagan.

I don’t like that the term is “PODcast,”

Sure, I get that. And it is, and there’s nothing any of us can do to change that now. Why fight the ocean on this one? Not a hill worth dying on (and I do have to remind myself of this often, so it’s not just you).

I thought about that one, too, but that was more a Boomer nostalgia about the adventure stories they loved as children and less reflective of Gen-X. Not that I don’t love it to pieces, though.

An excellent one. Good satire of consumerism in that one

Princess Bride maybe hasn’t been mentioned? Not at all reflective of Gen-X in any way, I just adore it.

Good to know, I guess. I tried to stem the tide at least, but it didn’t work out.

Here, I’ll get you a Kleenex (that is actually a Kirkland tissue from Costco). And I’ll Xerox you a copy of a study of brand name genericization on my Cannon copier (although to be fair that usage seems to be fading out, due to a combination of Xerox not being as prominent in the photocopier field and photocopiers themselves fading out now that most documents are digital and you might as well print out a new copy as photocopy an old one).

Generation Jonez is the worst of the boomers.

Generation X: We’ve got a great future behind us.

Don’t blame me - I voted for Jesse Jackson.

Because it is rad?

“Boomers” aren’t all old people, much as “Millenials” aren’t all young people. People who watched the original cliffhanger movie serials in the 1930s and 1940s would be “Silent Generation” or even “GI Generation”. Boomers would be more nostalgic for 1950s television like “Ozzy & Harriet” and “Howdy Doody” (at the earliest).

FWIW in all generations and as much of human history that can be confirmed, kids have liked adventure stories. It’s hard for me to see with something like Raiders of the Lost Ark what parts belong to which generation. Like… at all.

Because Raiders of the Lost Ark literally was the dominant childhood adventure movie franchise of my actual childhood.

i would submit that the self-aware joking tone of Princess Bride is very much a Gen-X trait, so i would definitely include it. (although to be fair, that movie is so good it spans generations)

Well, in addition to that, we should also include all the early Muppet Movies!

I mean, same, because it’s cool. (And rather a Gen X joke, it seems to me.)

“Muppets take Generation X”

I would watch that until the VHS tape died.
