No, if you want to use a disease metaphor you need to pick an infectious one, since it spreads from mind to mind. Actually, since most successful religions cause their hosts (you can interpret that in the parasitic or angelic senses as you wish) to act in ways that further their spread even at the host’s expense, toxoplasma might be a good choice.
