Oh wow - that looks familiar,

… found rummaging in library discard sale stacks

Right?!

… in this case it was during the 90’s vinyl-is-perma-dead mass-delusion, but still.

I feel that I have to put this somewhere. Not seen IRL, but done IRL:

  1. Gather 4 pairs of chopsticks (8 total)
  2. In each hand, clench 4 chopsticks 'twixt the fingers
  3. Drum all 8 chopsticks on a hard surface while whistling “Sweet Georgia Brown”
  4. Note how long before someone complains

I got about 9 seconds in.

I think it says ПУТІН сеть (Putin Net or Putin Network) what does it mean? It is on a escalator between Helsinki Central railway station (where most of the Russians get off their train from St. Petersburg) and metro station.

Narrator: The common flicker.

Spotted IRL, but I didn’t grab the phone in time, so here it is in the field guide. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

This made me very happy because I’d not seen one in at least 10 or 12 years – before that, I’d see (or more llikely, hear) one every so often.

So, not-so-Common Flicker?

Nice! Those are one of my favorites. We see them on the lawn in the warm months.
Also didn’t get a pic, but saw an eastern bluebird today! They’re not uncommon, regionally, but we’ve only been seeing them around our place the last year or so. I think adding suet to our bird feeding set up helped.

Before Covid, when I was there more often, sometimes I’d see eastern bluebirds at work (nice open spaces for them; not otherwise surrounded by development).

Something took off with our suet cage at home (twice), which hung from an otherwise squirrel-proof feeder. I didn’t replace it after the last time, in hopes of finding something with a stronger attachment.

We have one of those hanging suet cages and the squirrels keep jail breaking it and absconding with the block of suet.
I’ve tried plastic zip ties, tie-wire, and other reinforcements, but not yet found the solution.
In related news, our squirrels have the most luxurious coats of the neighborhood!
