The BBC banning Relax was hilarious. The best selling single of 1984 and 52 weeks in the top 40 (35 of which coincided with the ban), five weeks at number 1 and two weeks at number 2 (behind Two Tribes), and it’s still one of the best selling singles of all time in the UK 40 years later. I think the BBC stopped officially banning songs after that.

I watched Top of the Pops religiously back then, and every one of those weeks we’d bet each other whether or not they would finally acknowledge the song. As far as I know, they had never not played the video (or a live performance) of the #1 song at the very end of the show each week. It was quite the stalemate.

Right, that’s why I can’t believe it was played on Casey Kasem’s show. Either way, that live version that hit number one is a great audience participation song. Chuck Berry really plays the crowd.
