I watched Top of the Pops religiously back then, and every one of those weeks we’d bet each other whether or not they would finally acknowledge the song. As far as I know, they had never not played the video (or a live performance) of the #1 song at the very end of the show each week. It was quite the stalemate.

Right, that’s why I can’t believe it was played on Casey Kasem’s show. Either way, that live version that hit number one is a great audience participation song. Chuck Berry really plays the crowd.
