You could say that Theon’s torture & castration scenes were unnecessary, but they’re not going to trigger anyone except maybe in time-travelling guests of the Spanish Inquisition.

I really do think that’s the source of a lot of the handwringing. Certainly not all of it, of course, but…

So this is about “triggering” and not other things?

It isn’t my job to decide, in a television show, what elements of the plot are “necessary” or not. That’s why we have writers and directors.

No, but you’re certainly able to discuss whether what the writers & directors chose worked or not (and this season they’re certainly big on inserting rape wherever they can). This one felt unnecessary - their point could have easily been made with Theon closing the door & staying in the room, but they then went on to show the rape actually occurring. It felt like it was added to show how edgy the show is as much as anything else.
