I don’t know which came first, the rails or the market, but at some point someone was installing one or the other and saying to themselves “this seems like a good idea.”
Thailand has some great trains. The night train to Changmai has a disco in the front car.

The thing is that trains run so infrequently that market traders find it worthwhile to open stalls along the line and lay out goods right next to the track for customers who are literally walking on the track even though they have to move everything out of the way when a train comes.
