Incumbent GOP senator Mark Kirk turns to racism

You appear to not be the sort that goes into politics, for them I vastly have no faith in (with exceptions time to time.)

Which makes it even dumber for Kirk to bag on her — the DAR is/was a notoriously conservative and racist organization.

That’s news to Max Cleland. And John Kerry, who’s not technically disabled but does have three Purple Hearts.

Their approval of VA cuts also indicates that voters largely don’t support vets.

Look, if you want to get all "fact"y, you at least can’t deny Republicans are pretty strongly supportive of honoring* disabled vets.

(* - Honoring consists of saying “Thank you for your service” at least once to at least one veteran)

I wish people took care of their well-being versus “honoring” like they “honor” women, America, fiscal conservatism and fetuses once out of the womb.

Or Ron Kovic. Or Hugh Thompson Jr.

The entire “GOP is the party of military support” meme is raw bullshit. The only part of the military reliably supported by the GOP is Lockheed Martin et al.

Politicians have lots of reasons for “supporting the troops”, few of which actually support the troops. Reagan x2, Bush x1, Clinton x2, Bushx2, Obama x2… Plenty of power held in Congress by either side for extended periods. They’ve had ample time in the previous two generations to make the veteran’s administration lush with funding.

Politicians “support the troops” to shame pacifists and win elections. The best way to support the troops is to never send them to fight unless it is absolutely necessary.

Well if you want to talk about things that are difficult to understand, why are many of the vets I see down at the VA (where I get my own medical care) included in those Republican voters? Oh sure, the Republicans will vote to slash their medical care and treat active service members like meeples in a game of Risk, but at least they wear miniature American flag pins while they’re doing it.

First of all, I’m not defending the guy, I think it’s clear he’s using race as a dividing point, but I used the word “explicitly” because it’s not explicit, it’s veiled behind what he thinks is “catching her in a lie”, and which might actually play to some of his constituents who don’t know her family history.

I don’t deny this is racism, but I was really addressing those here who didn’t see an obvious slur, because it’s not obvious, he’s not calling her a rude word nor is he saying something about Asian culture, he’s implying she’s an outsider, which (again) was not very obvious to some people here.

Totally agree - but this is one place where the difference between the party leadership and the rank and file is very noticeable.

Republican leadership is pretty execrable - as is no small part of the following. And while I would say that is also true of the Democratic party, the Republican party is clearly an order of magnitude worse. I won’t deny it; hell, the current Republican candidate proves it.

In practice, the rank and file agrees with the leadership in priorities, or else “Obama [etc] hates Vets” wouldn’t be so popular of a cry and successful handwave away.

I’m not speaking for you, but the aggregate.

If anything, it struck me as “This guy refuses to endorse Trump, but then goes and uses some of our best material™? who the fuck does he think he is?”

I think this author’s feelings about being “American” describe pretty perfectly how Kirk’s behavior affects people. We can’t “other” people and expect to be a unified nation.

They don’t want unity, they want a human/subhuman hierarchy.
