The thing about Velma was that she was always understated in the show. Smart, sensible but somewhat dull and pragmatic. In all of those early 70s Hanna-Barbera shows, there are Velma-like characters who sort of blend into the scenery while the more outlandish characters (talking dogs, sharks or dunebuggies) get all the good lines.

I’m not sure about that. Scooby’s lines were all about the goofy delivery (“ruh-roh!”) rather than any kind of razor-sharp wit.
