Silly me for thinking Monty Python was satire.

I’m confused, did his wife run for office or did she automatically become MP when her husband was convicted?

Similar question to @futnuh, and added: can a native speaker please translate the meaning of this tweet?

I read “I’m forced by that ruling to divorce this person and I am hurt, because I loved him. Leave me alone.”

I’m confused.

He stood down after the initial accusations, his wife was selected by the local party to run in his place.

He was fighting the charges and protesting his innocence. Presumably she chose to believe his version of events until now.

Even by the standards of people who think that “the nasty party” is a term of endearment this seems to fall deep into squick territory.

The endlessly-loveable Conservative Party knew about the allegations against Elphicke for more than a year before taking any action by removing the whip. They then reinstated him to the party just before a vote of confidence in Theresa May’s government. This from the party that endless rants about liberals and judges not caring about victims.

That’s not how it works. Though given the decision of the local Tory party to select her as Tory candidate for the election, and voters in a safe Tory seat to vote for a turd on a stick with a blue rosette, it might as well be how it works.

It is scary how difficult it is to get rid of some Tories in safe seats. Neil Hamilton is a good example, he had accepted payment to ask questions in parliament but only lost his seat in 1997 because all the other main parties didn’t run against Martin Bell, who was running as an independent.

Martin Bell said that he would only serve one term as an MP, so he was replaced by George Osborne. The current MP for Tatton is Esther McVey, so I guess being an arsehole is usually a requirement to be elected there.

Tatton is where the rich people who have to work in Manchester live, if anyone is interested. They are too scared to actually live in Manchester, they might catch socialism.

Or rather, don’t fuck them. They don’t deserve it.

This was precisely the first thing I thought of, too

It’s possible that when she heard the women’s testimony, she recognized her husband’s seduction habits and turns of phrase.

Which is an apt description of this person, given a brief perusal of her tweets.
