If I had to guess I’d say that looks more like millions of fish, not thousands.

Yeah, probably hundreds of thousands at least. It said 1300 tons. So if the average fish weighs less than 2.6 lbs, it’s a million fish.
Whatever the specific cause is, I’d be willing to bet the root cause is climate change.
Conspiracies abound that wastewater released from the site of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant killed the fish but the Japanese government says that’s untrue.

Cant go by what governments say ,get the Geiger counter out.
If you look at where Hakodate is on a map, you’ll see why that is unlikely.
Maybe Anglian Water is exporting it’s ineptitude.
