Jeremy Renner insists that Black Widow is a slut

Can’t help but agree with Rob here. Going back to the original points made in the linked article; that Stark and Star-Lord etc are known as the “playboy” type - and are basically given a “boys will be boys” attitude towards casual sex - while girls are still treated as “sluts” for being sexually active.

Yes, it is an opinion on a fictional character, but it feeds into the public attitude towards such issues - the subtle (or not so subtle) pushing of an unrepentant misogynistic patriarchal opinion (yeah, that sounds patronising and pretentious, but that’s the only way I can think of addressing it) helps solidify similar opinions in some of the public’s minds.

So yeah, really. This is important.

He actually did say that.

It’s either that or economics. Be glad it was this one.

@popobawa4u - I love you man (I AM ASSUMING HERE SORRY), but, really, we’re stateful bags of meat-logic. Logical Idealism is, logically, a nice ideal - but, logically, still only an ideal; I’m just gonna drop a rock on your meat-foot and refute it thus..

BB is a rag, yet here you are. You disagree, that’s fine, but if you really don’t enjoy the blog, why are you here talking about this at all?

Renner defended calling her a slut, but no one actually DID call anyone else a slut, just her. It’s a gendered insult.

And yet you keep coming back for more.

Not really making sweeping proscriptive moral judgments in my comment, Gene. What you do with your Oompa Loompas is your call.

You said:

Would this not be somewhat deserving of a negative title or critique?

Now, granted, you mentioned the issue of impact on work (which is a separate issue, IMHO), but this was your main point. How is that not a moral judgement? Why is sexual activity considered “deserving of a negative title…”? Why do we call women out for that more often then men?

I doubt he calls his Oompa Loompas sluts, make or female.

I have a few comments a s a whole here. First I agree with some points a few people have made regarding “Why do we care what Jeremy Renner thinks anyway”. He’s an actor, does his sociopolitical views on sexual conduct truly matter? Secondly I sort of agree with Renner…Its a fictional character in an adventure super hero film and comic book. It wasn’t a serious docu-drama with an intent on being some kind of statement about real life values or main stream views. It’s a popcorn movie intended to entertain. Now if we do take the top two items there and flip them and say we care what Renner thinks, then he admitted at the end “Hey, if I did it I’d be a slut too” He removed it being a gender issue and made it being a promiscuity issue. Also, if we want to look at the fictitious character, her Soviet spy training we should be fully aware involved using sex to exploit others. Black Widow as a character would have no qualms about seducing anyone at any time to further advance her goals and complete a mission. Sluttiness included in her arsenal of tools at her disposal.

Now, I also want to point out. Rob…your take down above of one of the posters is arrogant and self righteous. I’m slightly appalled you spoke in the tone and manner you did. Maybe I shouldn’t be and should have not expected more, but if that’s the case then shame on me.

Promiscuity is not only used in pursuit of selfish goals. It is also a virtuous way of life.

personally, my mindset is simply if you are not affecting me or mine in a harmful way…who am I to judge? What happens between consenting adults is their business, not mine.

If you watch Renner and Johannson together, guy can tell they are flirty friends. Kissing, hugging each other, always joking. He is the one she asked to give a speech at her Hollywood Walk of Fame induction. I think he is super comfortable joking about this character because of how close he is to the actress.

I know, it’s crazy. You would think that I would have already mentioned that.

Yes, it’s obviously a gendered insult. When did I say otherwise? But really? No one ever in the history of the universe has called “anyone” else a slut?

I’m not saying it’s not used for guys, in this case, it wasn’t. The same behavior in one person, who was man was not treated the same way as the same behavior by another, who was a woman. So, you could possibly use the term for men, it’s often prefaced by “male” because in general, it’s a gendered term.

“But Moooooooom, all the other kids at school use that word!”

On the other hand, in the original version of the novel, doesn’t he come fairly close to having enslaved them?

That’s what Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory needed. More similarities to Mandingo!
