Joe Biden accused of sexual assault

Can you imagine that someone sexually assaults you and when you finally come forward with your horrible and viceraly personal story, all anyone can talk about is how it affects the candidates and the election?

What an amazing gaurantee. You have any data to support such a prejudiced statement?

Nope. Other than this includes calling a woman “sweetie” or “doll” or “hon.”

I guess I am the exception since I was taught to not even use she or he as this is a sign of dissrespect.

Maybe the Democrats should ask Mueller to look into it.

That’s fair. My point is more that there was a way of treating women that was as improper then as it is now. There are stories of Bernie being touchyfeely too. If Biden withdraws, you can damn well bet some woman who worked with Bernie at some point in the 80s or 90s is going to come forward with a story that’s equally as believable or possible. And then we’ll be there again.

Now, I do believe victims, and I do believe this is a horrible problem, and I also believe that there are people who are hired to manipulate our opinions and to get us to vote for who they want (or not vote at all.) My problem here isn’t that I don’t believe the victim, it’s that I cannot see this ending well for ANY democrat, Bernie included. That was my reason for disqualifying all white old males, because every one of them has probably been in a position where they will be compromisable based on the same level of evidence and scrutiny we’re going to hang Biden out to dry with.

How do you know when it’s not a political game / bot / Russian looking for a way to support Bernie (as they were doing) or Trump (as they were, and probably still are doing)? My metric has always been to look at what people want the outcome to be. People here want the outcome to be Bernie to be the nominee and no one else. Why no one else?

Welcome to the conversation comrade.

I want to be clear so my motives are understood:

If Joe Biden did what he’s being accused of, he needs to not only withdraw, but go to jail. And everyone involved with him that covered up, needs to go to jail. Everyone who endorsed him immediately is disqualified from being a candidate. I’m all for punishing Joe Biden if he did this.

So asking the follow up question IS relevant. So what happens next? After that? Because there’s a plague on and a shitty president and it does matter who we replace Biden with.

Sorry. I’m distraught with the contemporary pool of accused rapist v accused rapist / fascist.

it feels and looks like anytime the electorate takes on the ills of our contemporary society, be it MeToo, BlackLivesMatter, NewGreenDeal … it somehow becomes exactly the opposite choices we are given.

And when distraught with such things I turn to hateful humor.

Biden’s not dropping out, and not going to jail. This allegation happened 27 years ago, and first reported to police a few days ago. No witness and no evidence, so there will be no real investigation that can ever clear this up. It is now a case for the public to decide, and will come down to personal credibility.

I hear ya, no worries, we’re all frustrated with this shit. Your previous comment/hidden profile just had my eyebrow twitching.

Part of my incredulity to this is this is literally from the playbook of James O’Keefe. We’ve seen him caught pulling something like ten different scams, all trying to do something exactly like this. And yes, I don’t want to believe Joe could rape someone, so it’s definitely clouding my bias. So because of that, I’m trying to assume it’s made in good faith. But at the same time, this is exactly how it’d also look if it were made in bad faith . Coming out just after Bernie suspends, all the troll accounts my mom follows on twitter that retweet Trump things (and have names like “Midwest Mommy” (not real, just an example) or “God’s Child Iowan” or “Patriot Mommy”) are now all retweeting this, some with the same exact phrasing, and it’s all over the right wing blogosphere.

It just seems like a trick. And I’m someone who watched voters fall for tricks, we see this all over Boing Boing all the time regarding Trump and the GOP tactics/techniques.

It’s frustrating as all heck, because like any good trap, it’s designed so we can’t win. Either we don’t believe the #metoo movement, or we force Biden to withdraw, or we have to vote against one of two rapists. Every one of these options will be a weapon.

It didn’t come out just after Bernie suspended his campaign. Reade made her most serious allegation 3 weeks ago. Her first accusations of inappropriate touching came a year ago. Her story has escalated over time, but that’s very much par for the course in these scenarios. If you’re upset that it didn’t start to gain any traction until close to the time that Bernie suspended, you’ll have to take that up with the NYT and the other outlets that, for whatever reason, did not report on the story until then.

As for the signal boosting from the right-wing, they’re probably doing that because it’s a story that damages their opponent’s chances in the election. Liberals are doing the same thing by doing their best to make sure that no one forgets what a catastrophe Trump’s covid response has been–they want people to remember what a screw-up he was come November, and they want that information to sway the election. That doesn’t make the information invalid or especially worthy of doubt.

I agree 100%. This really, really sucks. But if all the options are bad, it seems to be all the more reason to stick with the option that best safeguards our principles. If Biden gets the nomination, the Democrats are basically telling people like Christine Blasey Ford, “You don’t matter. Your stories matter to the extent that we can use them as a political weapon. If your stories are inconvenient to our political project they will be ignored.” That is going to severely limit the ability for victims of assault to seek justice in the future, and it removes all moral standing for Democrats to hold the Republicans accountable the next time they try to appoint someone with allegations against them–at least allegations that reach the same level as Ford and Reade’s story, which meet very similar thresholds.
