This just in: Nathan’s Famous admits that a hot dog made with meat substitute is a “rival brand”.
Bun intended consequences
This paragraph confused me until I followed the link and read the NPR story. The paragraph immediately before it provides needed context:
[Chestnut] said he does not have a contract with MLE or Nathan’s Famous, and accused them of “looking to change the rules from past years as it relates to other partners I can work with.”
This whole thing is a contract dispute. Apparently, because Nathan’s sponsors the famous Coney Island contest, they have a clause in their contract or rules saying competitors can’t represent other hot dog makers, although Chestnut seems to be disputing that. Anyway, MLE and Nathan’s said that they have been “allowing” Chestnut to participate in other non-sponsored eating events, and when he signed a sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods, MLE and Nathan’s tried to get him to exclude hot dogs from that deal, and he refused. Frankly, MLE and Nathan’s are acting like they thought Chestnut was an employee of theirs, and he’s clearly not. They can set whatever rules for their contest they want, but I think I’m siding with Chestnut on this one.

Nathan’s Hot Dogs, the iconic American hot dog chain, has faced backlash due to its executive chairman Howard Lorber’s close ties with former President Donald Trump and his support through political donations and fundraising events.
Nathan’s seems to not like competition and the free market. The owner is a huge Trumper. Of course Nathan’s will try and not compete in that market fair and square.
It’s a pervasive thought process that infects all of society.
K. Not sure why that was a reply to me…
You know? I’m not sure either. I saw that as I hit reply. I’m on my 4th sip of coffee. I hope your day goes well.
At least we’re all confused together!
Yeah, politics is pervading everything these days. A hot dog mogul on Trump's economic team? Makes perfect sense | Donald Trump | The Guardian
You can’t buy a hot dog these days without worrying you are inderectly supporting Nazism. What a world.
Seems like a rare case of free agency working in someone’s advantage. It’s great advertising for Impossible (who I didn’t even know had hot dogs) and Chestnut. I guess it helps to be top of your chosen field versus say an Uber driver just trying to scrape by.
Good thing impossible meat is a taco filling or perhaps sandwich meat.
Well I think free agency in popular competitive sports often works to the advantage of the free agent. In everyday labor, not so much. Although even there, when labor truly is free to shop their labor around to the highest bidder, it usually helps them. That’s why collective bargaining is so important.
right?!
nazis are some of the wurst people!
/s?
Remember that if it weren’t for Trump, there would be taco stands on every corner…
