If only their designs were digital, they could then have DMCA’d the site into non-existence with ease.

Solution: Steganographically* embed a simple bit of code!

This was an argument against DMCA: That car makers could embed something in the headlight housing, and argue that bypassing a lock on the housing was a DMCA violation. Everyone scoffed, and then the dystopian future became true.

I agree with your assessment of this timeline.
