We are voting tomorrow for a new mayor – 14 candidates – and right now the candidate polling just barely in first place is not the brother of the last-but-one mayor (Bill Daley) or the current Cook County Board President and previously LONG term alderman (Toni Preckwinkle) or any of the other well-known local politicians, but rather Lori Lightfoot, who was brought in to chair the Police Accountability Task Force in 2016 and then became President of the Chicago Police Board to further hold them accountable. Most of her work (other than being a lawyer) has been to deal with police corruption in this city. That’s her main qualification for the position of mayor, which is why she’s doing so well against a dozen other much-better-known candidates.

We can only hope for such an outbreak of sanity, but current events cause me to doubt that will happen. Still, hope blooms eternal, right?
