Where you will be safe from the lava?
I kid, I expect it’s mostly “stay off the road so that emergency vehicles and evacuations can proceed without interference, also don’t go an gawk.”
The latter would be an extremely hard urge to suppress.
We better start chucking in politicians to appease Pele. Just to be safe.
That, plus I think the advice to stay indoors is because of the ash. From Xeni’s quote of the AP article:
An advisory was issued by the National Weather Service in Honolulu, warning of fallen ash from the volcano. Excessive exposure to ash is an eye and respiratory irritant, it said.
Having been in Spokane in 1980 not long after the Mt St Helens eruption, I can say that the ash that was still in the air was very sharp and gritty, and you did not want to get it in your eyes or breathe it.
Madame Pele is back in business - pay your respects everyone.
