Kutcher faces new PR nightmare after disturbing comment about underage Hilary Duff resurfaces

I’ll admit I didn’t get to your second paragraph after reading multiple posts where you made excuses for his behavior. I should have and I’m glad you see this as a pattern now.

Yeah, like I said, those comments of mine were made in reference to this one clip, before I was aware there was a pattern to his behaviour.

In my experience, and probably the experience of most women and femme presenting enby people, a single comment like that made publicly is the tip of the creepy misogynist ice burg. I didn’t know about it before today, but absolutely would have guessed he said something like that once I’d read about the letter he wrote to the judge.
There will probably be more of this kind of behavior coming out in the next few weeks.

Agreed. I figured he was being “in character” for the show, but evidently not.

I’m wrong about things roughly eight times a day.

I remember thinking that was kinda weird at the time. Didn’t dawn on me that the whole “waiting for her to be 18” thing was basically saying “I want to say the shit I’ve been thinking out loud in public”. Which kinda tells everyone what you’ve been thinking anyway, doesn’t it? I hope we’ve grown past that sort of thing, as a society.

That’s a better average than many people out there. If you can admit you’re wrong eight times a day and commit yourself to doing better the next day, then you’re growing. You’re not expected to be perfect or even strive for it. But better than you were the day before? That’s a perfect goal.

Hell yes. 20 years ago is still important. There’s no time limit on this sort of thing.

At Numbers 31:17-18 Moses seems to be instructing his tribe, or at least the male members of his tribe, to forcibly take the captured underage female Midianites as their “wives”, after killing all the rest. Yet none of the Abrahamic religions seem willing to condemn Moses for the monster that he is. They seem to regard him as some sort of hero. And yes, the bible is full of this sort of abuse “way back then”, but that makes it even more important that it gets discussed. It’s a pattern of abuse. Moses is a famous person telling every creep and predator in his tribe that it’s ok to abuse underage female prisoners.

Now this whole bible story may well be complete fiction but even if Moses is fictional, millions regard him as real and he’s far more famous than Ashton Kuchner, who I couldn’t actually place, along with most of the other people named in the story.

Decent writers make a difference

As usual, “The Wire” handled the subject with more nuance, but yeah… waiting for the latest child stars to come of age, seemed to be a bit of a trope at the time. Creepy.

Edit: CW: video contains homophobic misogynistic knucklehead cops.

Back around that time, Robot Chicken had just started up and was fast getting its well-deserved rep for gross-out comedy. And one of their earliest episodes had an extended gag featuring the Olsen twins - played by themselves - as superheroes with the Wonder twins’ powers. At the start of the sketch it cuts to two guys in a crowd of fans, one says something like “dude, they’re almost legal!” and the other replies “dude, you’re 35!”,

That whole countdown until they’re 18 website thing had started up a few years earlier and comments like Kutcher’s were very common in entertainment aimed at young men. At least some people were calling it out in that same space.

Thanks for that detailed, thoughtful, and insightful response. It was excellent.

Some people seem to assume that behaviour that is unacceptable now was accepted several decades ago. I read someone saying something along the lines of “this isn’t the 1980s, corporal punishment isn’t acceptable any more”, which gave me a bit of a shock because (now I’m showing my age) back in the 1980s there were people saying “this isn’t the 1950s, corporal punishment isn’t acceptable any more”.

I dare say that there were campaigners saying similar things in the 1950s too. All that changes is that the “back then” time when the unacceptable was supposedly acceptable moves forward and is always somewhere between twenty and fifty years ago.

Damn. I watched the clip. Everett doubled down and threw in some homophobic bullshit after Tomlin walked off.
