The headline and this sentence both say Kyrgyzstan, but another sentence says Kazakhstan, and the games appear to be in Kazakhstan. Is that a typo or am I missing something?
So is Kok Boru the same game as Buzkashi (Afghan dead goat polo, showcased in Rambo 3), or is it a distinct but related game, like soccer/American football/rugby/Australian rules football are all related games?
It’s embarrassing when you get your stans mixed up.
Even more embarrassing when you don’t know Afghanistan is in Asia.
Also noticing that many of the grappling sports are very similar:
- Qazaq kuresi - basically judo with shorter sleeves on the jacket and no ground-fighting
- Ashyrtmaly Aba Gureshi - jacket/belt wrestling with no ground-fighting
- Alysh - belt wrestling where your grip on your opponent’s belt doesn’t ever change. No ground-fighting.
- Koresh - belt wrestling with no ground-fighting
- Kuresh - basically identical to judo with no ground-fighting
Since they’re all Turkic peoples descended from or related to the nomadic peoples of the central Asian steppe, I suppose it shouldn’t be too surprising. I’m a little surprised there isn’t Bokh, the Mongolian traditional jacket wrestling as well.
The World Nomad Games were founded by the Kyrgyz government. The first, second and third games were held in Kyrgyzstan.
The fourth games were held in Turkey.
This year’s games will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Thanks. The post did not make that clear.
Was everyone expecting the nomad games to stay in the same place?
Soyuz booster catching is pretty exclusive to Kazakhstan though, as those pesky nanny state EU safety rules make it impossible to do it in France.
No. I just didn’t understand the Kyrgyzstan connection because nothing in the post explained that. Forgive me for not being well educated on the history of the Nomad Games.
Whooosh…
No, I understood the joke.
All it was was a joke. That’s why I used the term “everyone” instead of using the term “you.” For the record, this post was the first time I heard of the nomad games. Have a good day.
“Kyrgyzstan’s World Nomad Games: Yurt-building, headless goat polo, horseback wrestling, and hunting with eagles…”
Stop! You had me at headless goat rodeo
I’m afraid I have to ask you to repeat this statement.
