LA news show slut shames weather forecaster on air

It’s been mentioned several times that it was intended as a joke.

Most of the thread doesn’t care because it isn’t funny, and in fact illustrates a problem with our society. Especially because this shit is completely plausible.

I admit not having read the whole thread, but enough posts to see that most people think it was actually serious. Yes, there is a rampant problem in society, but this incident doesn’t illustrate it. It pretty well illustrates a second problem, though: the way uninformed opinions clash with each others over minor provocations and people get on their high horses all the time because nobody knows anything but everybody has an point of view. The real problem: people just suck up bits of info and then go to crusades with each others.

I agree there’s multiple problems here.

What on godzurth makes you think she needs to see anything?

What a delightful shade of green.

From reddit discussion
https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/4jgghe/ktla_handed_their_meteorologist_a_sweater_live_on/

“That’s just KTLA humor. They fuck about a lot, they were just messing with her on a slow day. They do it a lot, they’re pretty genuine seeming people.”

I knew she looked familiar! She has a hard time finding green screen safe dresses apparently https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THUhCrPFALk

"So, to be clear, I was watching this broadcast.

She wore the sweater for the remainder of that weather segment (1-2 minutes) and then took it off and just wore the dress for the rest of the broadcast (several hours).

This kind of thing is pretty in-line with the type of humor the KTLA hosts (especially Chris Borroughs, the male host here) inject into their morning news segments. Even more so on weekends.

Liberte (the weather woman) does typically wear more conservative dresses, so I’m guessing it was just an attempt by Borroughs to poke fun at her during a slow news day. She even came out and showed the dress that she planned to wear that day and explained it wasn’t working with the green screen.

If the station really had an issue with her or the dress, they would have made her change or keep the sweater on the entire broadcast.

It’s a bit ridiculous to go all SJW on this. Watch KTLA morning news for a few months and you’ll start seeing that this is just kinda how they do things."

I haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but… Just look at those temperatures she’s reporting… Low 60s all around… That’s “Sweater Weather”.

Was that the joke?

Swap genders. Is it still a joke?

Actually, they did make that joke if you watch the video. The woman doing the weather ask that Anchor to come out from behind the desk and show everyone what he was wearing for pants.

your outrage is out of calibration

Whose outrage? It seems to me that if you’re interpreting posts of the nature “This is a thing that’s wrong, and this is what’s wrong with it” as “outrage”, then it’s your own rage-o-meter that’s out of whack.

If the only two settings it has are “silence” and “outrage”, I think you should throw the old thing on the junk heap and get one of the new digital multidimensional meters with readings for mild disappointment, apathetic complaint, disinterested infodump, exasperation at the same old shit, and so on. I think it will make reading comments on these kinds of posts a more illuminating experience.

Ladies, it couldn’t be any clearer.

  • always be sexy or we’ll ignore and disparage you

  • never be too sexy or we’ll discredit and disparage you

  • precise values of “sexy enough” and “too sexy” are in a constant state of flux - remain vigilant and keep a sweater handy

  • any woman who experiences harassment or assault is automatically too sexy, regardless of actual clothing, behaviour, age, consciousness, or other factors

Like you, here worrying about this and not alerting us to “the real problem”?

Outrage over outrage: the Silent Scourge.

The coworker called her immodest on air and cited fake emails calling attention to her inappropriate dress, it’s not the worst but it’s still sexism and at best, why defend it?

That’s the thing, someone who thinks this is a good idea is biased to make an unfunny joke of pure sexism and lose any punch up this terrible world context that could have been funny. Funny how that works out!

“Hahaha let’s make up people calling you a whore because you show so much skin that people probably think you’re a whore, no this is a joke even though I’m by proxy calling you a whore though my fake letters…”

You personally contribute to outrage culture. You feed on it. You’re culpable and get off on it. If you dislike it don’t jump in with both fists punching as you have here. Move on, find somehing better to worry about as you’ve patronizingly and smugly told others to do.

Guess it’s annoying and not at all helpful to hear that your opinion doesn’t matter at all, isn’t it?

It’d be a better joke if they were talking about a snow storm coming in, otherwise wouldn’t a dozen+ people see her before she goes on camera and wouldn’t one of them said something…

It’s almost as if humor is more than saying her exposed womaninity is distressing others and it’s her coworker’s responsibility to protect them from such wantonness!

That dress looked great on her- it’s not like her butt cheeks were showing or something.

I heard a snippet on the radio on the way to work today that no, it wasn’t a joke.

I understand places have dress codes, or guidelines, etc. That’s fine. Typically news rooms have a business or business casual look to them. If the dress was an issue it should have been addressed off air before she ever went on. It’s called professionalism. If it wasn’t addressed before she went on, it should have been addressed off air after she went on.

I suggest everyone read Ms Chan’s comments (link posted above) before they jump to conclusions, she makes it pretty clear she thought it was a joke and takes no offense.

What is your point?

They can couch it as they want, she can respond as she feels comfortable with as an employee wanting to remain employed, but that doesn’t make it less trash of an unfunny “joke”.
