Not an event, but Iβm reading Carl Hiassenβs latest fiction, βSqueeze Me.β Itβs set in the recent past, Mar a Lago is cleverly disguised as Casa Bellicosa, thereβs a full-time tanning booth technician on staff, and a beloved character and defender of nature from earlier books appears to be releasing the invasive Burmese pythons into the Casa Bellicosa area.
Iβve heard βThe West Wingβ called βliberal pornβ when people needed an escape from the GW presidency, an escape into a smart, thoughtful administration. This book is like the opposite of that, an escape into an exaggerated version of now, but hilarious. And knowing Hiassen, the baddies will get it in the end.
Sounds fun. I used to get into trouble for saying that the West Wing was what liberals masturbated themselves to sleep to while 24 was changing the world.
Someone on Twitter scared me by claiming that Trump would βpocket vetoβ the bill by waiting 10 days then return the bill to Congress, but as no one will be home on January 3rd (Sundays donβt count), he could pocket the bill.
No worries, he canβt pocket that bill. His 10 days were almost up already. (It cleared Congress on Dec 11th.)
I think the COVID stimulus bill is out of reach of pocketing too, but I wouldnβt count on anything else making it to law until the new session.
And in fairness, Iβm not even sure I know who the current PM of Ireland is (Taoiseach, maybe?) never mind what was going on there in eighteen hundred whatever.
It was kind of a d*ck move and Iβm a little glad someone called me out.
problem being theyβre in recess. for christmas. whoβs going to make them all come back?
then thereβs the covid bill, which all he has to do is sit on. not vetoing it means congress canβt act, and it simply doesnβt become law. ( or so i understand anyway )
( eta @RickMycroft i think the pocket veto does work for the covid bill because of the end of the year boundary, or something like that. all half heard on the radio though, so take it for the little thatβs worth )
They can reconvene. Given the importance of the COVID bill to everyoneβs constituents I would imagine thereβs a high level of motivation to get this passed.
The ratfuck gang should never have had careers in the first place. This dynastic criminality needs to be rooted out. Norms are already shredded. The norm whereby criminals in the previous regime are not the concern of the new one needs to go. These fuckers pollute the air everyone breathes.
I remember when Republicans were (justifiably) furious that Bill Clinton issued a pardon to international fugitive and former campaign donor Marc Rich. Seems that the standard for βhow close can a criminal be to the current President for the pardon to stink to high heavenβ has shifted a bit over the last 20 years.
