Forgive me, but being from the UK, this struck me as funny.
We aren’t allowed to carry penknives in public, let alone semi-automatic rifles.

I’d suspect cause and effect are the other way around—because the national Republican party’s policies and behavior are unpopular here, Republicans can’t win anything, serious conservatives don’t bother running for office, and there’s nobody in the Republican primaries except cranks

I think you’d be fine carrying a penknife as long as the blade folds and is 3 inches or less but lock knives are most certainly illegal unless you have a good reason for carrying one.
I guess a sword cane is right out of the question.

the part that makes no sense is that in lots of states edged weapons have restrictions ( and things like nunchucks, etc ) - but guns are basically a free for all.

Right?!? I was interested in getting a taser after trump was elected, because I was scared of how things might go and wanted a (mostly) non lethal means of self protection in case someone tried to start something with me. That’s illegal here, but I could get any assortment of guns.

I came here to post the same thing. My thinking is
a) is an insult to people without housing by the press reporting it. He’s reportedly living comfortably in some governor’s retreat. Not that I wouldn’t mind seeing him living in a cardboard box beneath an overpass somewhere, but this certainly ain’t that.
b) is just the same dysfunction as the capital riots. This guy has ample protection, the likes of which normal people could never enjoy. If there is a danger, it is pro-Trump Republicans in positions of authority in the government who refuse to crush those insurrectionist threats out of petty bitterness over the election. They want us to believe there is a revolution, when really it is a relatively small number of inept people allowed to be a threat by a large number of assholes standing around doing nothing.
