He wanted to lose.
I can’t imagine the country in 10 years even if he doesn’t get re-elected. The damage he’s done already is immeasurable. The human, economic and environmental costs of his policies and normalization of fascism/racism; the policies, laws and judges that will remain after he’s gone; the loss of institutional knowledge from all the federal departments that have been gutted; the damage to international relations, international institutions, joint international efforts; etc. That last one is more persistent than it might seem, too - we can replace the president and with him the secretary of state and ambassadors, but we will forever be the country that elected Trump (and could do the equivalent at any time again) - no one will ever trust this country going forward, and with good reason.
Now that would be surprising! (I don’t even think this is hyperbole, either.)
