Yeah, the really big specialized pieces can be a problem. Some designers take it as a challenge to build something meaningful around them, but they don’t fit in easily. And I’ve never seen anything worthwhile done with a Big Ugly Rock Piece.

I’m still upset that the largest non-Star Wars set you can buy has only 4,200 or so pieces (Tower Bridge), and the next largest has merely about 3,000 pieces AND is more expensive (Sydney Opera House). WTF! And then you just get generic buildings. I would totally buy large sets of cool real-life things, but alas there are none left.
There’s more than a bit of Dwarf Fortress in there as well, albeit in something similar to the sense that there’s a bit of VMS in DOS…
