The disaffected & poor have little representation in a society, when they join a gang they have protection & opportunities, illegal it may well be, it makes complete sense the existence of Gangs/Mafias.

There are a ton of movies about the mafia in Korea. It’s quite refreshing to see gangsters fighting in turf wars with knives and metal pipes, with not a single gun in sight.
