And yet another fine Torment Nexus product is brought into being by techbros on behalf of billionaire greedpigs who want to quell the peons.
The technology might be fun and neat, but I’m adding it to my JOMO list. And I’ll thank you to get off my AR lawn!
Yeah. Every time I’ve seen this in a movie or TV show, it just becomes a way of hiding squalor behind an elegant facade.
I just want all my furniture slightly wider and my doorframes slightly narrower so that maybe I can avoid ever stubbing my toes again. (and within a certain radius/while in center of vision the exact models would be loaded so that I’m not placing my cup too close to the edge of whatever)
Not a fan, eh?
It’s all well and good 'til someone puts an imaginary chair over a very real chasm & there’s our first actual AR murder…
What does JOMO mean? I can’t quite figure out the acronym.
“Joy Of Missing Out” (the introvert’s answer to “FOMO/Fear Of Missing Out”).
This is also explored in Vernor Vinge’s “Rainbow’s End”.
Going back to an earlier thread, this is pretty much exactly how a friend described living and working in Dubai.
I’m starting to think I might prefer the fine-tuned psychedelics.
There’s much more to that.
I always wanted to have a dog. That technology could simply convert my cats into dogs. Just visually, of course. Or it could I change my appearance, e.g. to my partner, viewing the room with me in it through a headset. Maybe take a couple of years off, create a slightly more toned appearance, maybe some other, more private, enhancements? Plus more hair, or even some nice fur on certain occasions. The sky’s the limit, really.
For certain values of “elegance”.
Ones that I definitely don’t share. I’ve never been to Dubai but its gaudiness is a part of that.
Very effectively explored it. That novel remains one of the most prescient near future visions since it was published, almost 20 years ago now. So many ideas explored. It convinced me AR will never be worth a damn until hi-res contact lens displays exist.
It’s been my reference point for blended AR/VR. I’d never even heard the idea of augmented reality before reading it. I loved the idea of kids using consensual shared game-world “overlays”.
This novel is peak Vinge. Sad that he’s stopped writing.
[ETA] The proper spelling “Rainbows End” has a subtle significance in the plot.
More like the curmudgeon’s answer, I think . . .
Or the cynic’s answer. Unfortunately, the way corporations like Facebook implement consumer AR will be a lot less fun and healthy than Vinge’s vision (but likely with the surveillance).
Vinge did slightly explore AR spam. And malware.
We need robust open-source defenses.
Including ones that aren’t dependent on digital technology, like privacy and consumer protection and right-to-repair laws.
Deep in the heart of every cynic lies an idealist, daring on rare occasion to hope against hope . . .
