Like Strike part II

Or, you could code the notification menu thing to summarize multiple likes from the same user, just as it now summarizes multiple replies to the same post …

 17 Likes from OtherMichael

As far as I can tell, he’s not actually trying to like every post on the BBS.

Is this a like problem or just a notification problem?

I’m not quite sure why you’d single out @anon67050589 as needing to stop what @OtherMichael is doing.

He has stated he’s doing it in reaction to me being the catalyst for the higher like limit. I don’t understand the reasoning at all.

The idea is “why should anything ever be limited”? Well, shit like this is why.

I’m not sure why @OtherMichael is doing what he’s doing and griefing a bunch of old posts with mindless likes. Maybe he can stop.

Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.

A bit of both, I have some ideas of how to improve this. Even if we collapse having a user constantly cause a blue flash can be annoying.

i still don’t understand why you even care about this. there’s no marginal cost to any of us because he’s doing this and if you don’t want to be bothered by it then shut off notifications for it.

Edit: not worth it.

Have a great day everyone!

2000 a day is hardly “unlimited.” I get shut down on a regular basis.

There are a lot of posts without likes.

There are a lot of people who could use a little love or at least a little red heart in their life.

Plus, it gets me out into the threads. The things I’ve seen! You should try it!

Nope.

There are a lot of sad, angry people out there who could use a little love, or at least a little red heart in their life.

Also: annual and all-time rankings. Black-box testing (because interrogating the source code isn’t as much fun as exploring).

@smulder - In digging up a thread dormant since 2013 I found a cool video, and got a post from a user who hadn’t posted since 2013, as well.

In my not-so-humble opinion, this community could do with a little more interaction with those who aren’t so much part of an in-crowd. I can’t force anybody else to talk or mingle or interact – but I can do it myself.

Wow. Do you react this way when you get hugged, as well?

And this is how you react online.

I knew you didn’t like long-term conversations. This is an interesting addition to the list.

Hey, if calling the liking of posts “a dick move” is allowed, why shouldn’t the liking of posts be allowed?

Or are we only allowed to be dicks and beat people over the head with how un-perfect they are around here?

Obvious trollies are flagged to oblivion. Fellow travellers who seldom post and are less-than-perfect are hounded away.

Likes are met with rage.

This community is insular and filled with agression.

I hope your day goes better than it has.

The barrage of likes from @OtherMichael got me to go back and read some of the things I’d written and since forgotten about. I found it very interesting, and I appreciate knowing that something I said was worth saying - not just in the heat of a particular discussion.

But obviously a lot of people felt bad when they got all those likes. It came across as aggressive or obnoxious or just a pain to scroll through. So much so that we should necro a thread full of anger and recrimination. Honestly, when @daneel was banned in this thread I almost left the BBS for good.

How are we all such fucking babies? Why do you give a shit about the like war? Why do I give a shit about it? Can’t we just control our fucking feelings for a few minutes? How is it that we’ve lived our whole lives having misunderstanding after misunderstanding and yet when someone does something that upsets us we assume they were acting in malice?

I had fun pretending that people could treat each other kindly with many of you for a while.
