Please don’t confuse Lonnie Liston Smith with Lonnie Smith. It is Lonnie Smith who died.
RIP.
Good lord. Thanks. Dumb error on my part.
DAMN IT. One of the best live-music experiences I ever had was listening to Lonnie Smith coax magic out of his Hammond in a dark basement club in State College, PA. Dude was a jazz shaman.
I didn’t realize they were different people either. Still sad.
Didn’t say what he dies from.
But if you tell me it was “organ failure”, we gonna fight.
It was pulmonary fibrosis, so in a sense yes, organ failure!
No problem. Not a dumb error, though. People have been mistaking them for ages. Both were great artists, played soul jazz and about the same age.
Gone, we all hope, to where it is never Too Damn Hot.
Jazz organists, especially when and if accompanied by a good guitarist, are sadly overlooked by music media.
