FWIW Boston Dynamics is not donating the robot – the Police Protective League, an organization basically formed to channel private funds to the LAPD without oversight from the City Council or the Mayor, is forking over $280,000 for a “Spot” robot. This is way, way above the list price for one of these, so goodness knows what the rest of the $$$ is for.
Also FWIW, Boston Dynamics is pretty stringent about not allowing people to weaponize their robots. They know the optics of that one. No, if the LAPD wanted a true Robocop with a gun, all they’d have to do is buy a lookalike robot from Ghost Robotics, whose entire business model is producing killer robots that look an awful lot like a “Spot” ripoff.
