It’s clear this thug is angling to be appointed head of the Bureau of Prisons under Il Douche. He or someone equally awful will have a real chance at running the gulags, so vote to make sure it doesn’t happen.
$3 per week doesn’t sound like payment to me
It isn’t, especially when the only place the inmates can spend it is at a commissary that charges extortionate prices (some of the proceeds of which are undoubtedly kicked back to the commandant).
Christ, what an asshole.
… free cigarettes would be a big deal in jail
Prison labor: the continuation of slavery by other means.
My friend wrote a book about the long history of forced labor in the United States, with a chapter on the historical origins of prison labor. She accepted my suggestion for the title, but thought that my idea of subtitling it “Slavery – it’s as American as apple pie!” was perhaps going a little too far.
The sheriff participating directly and openly in an ostensibly underground economy in the prison he runs is just what you’d expect of this scumbag.
[I know these cigarette economies are tolerated open secrets to the point of cliche, but they’re not officially allowed.]
Is it just me or does this sheriff look a lot more like the guy who’ll portray him on the TV special than who you thought you’d be looking at after reading those first headlines about the lawn signs?
Thinking of the pay phone rackets too.
Also donors, tonight’s movie: Fight Club

I’m still amazed that these positions in the US are chosen by what is essentially a popularity contest rather than a proper evaluation of an applicant’s ability to do the job.
Oh, it’s not just those positions…
And political patronage isn’t exactly unheard of, either.
As you might guess, those screaming loudest about ‘election fraud’ are those actually committing it.
ETA:
WTF is up with that asshole’s mustache? Is he going for the '80’s porn star look, or what? I think if he wasn’t a cop, he’d be driving one of these around:
His ‘alleged’ actions sound about right for a MAGAt in a position of power.
Only the best people…
Well, it is enshrined in the Constitution:
Thirteenth Amendment
Section 1
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
That one seems like it’d be worth examining the intentions of the drafters of that amendment to see if it’s a complete misreading of it. i.e. not the punishment applied to all prisoners, but a punishment which could be applied to some, if they were sentenced to it.
I have a feeling that if they dig deep, they’d find further malfeasances and shittery.
The Hogan/Horseshoe. Personally I think it is ugly af to the point of being kitschy or goofy, but some people really unironically see it as cool and masculine I guess.
That dude seemed nicer though.
“How To Outlaw Slavery Without Outlawing Slavery” would be my guess.
Ah. Makes sense.
I didn’t think the sheriff was a Motorhead fan:
